Hirepool The Big Clean – Sustainable Coastlines

Hirepool Big Clean Taranaki

We're bringing the Hirepool Big Clean to Taranaki!

Thanks to our mates at Hirepool, we’re bringing communities together to look after the moana right across the beautiful Taranaki region, celebrating International Coastal Cleanup Day.

We want to make this event as big and inclusive as possible, so there are two key ways to get involved:

  • Join the main community clean-up day on Sunday, 20 Septemberchoose your spot and bring your whānau. All are welcome.
  • Express your interest in a clean-up for your groupschools, marae/hapū, businesses or community groupsand we’ll organise it with you in the lead-up to the main event, between Monday 14—Saturday 19 September.
Public day: Sunday, 20 September 2026 from 12pm

Sunday is the big one!

  • East End Surf Club, Fitzroy, is our main event base. Meet us there from 12pm — we’ll have plenty of equipment on hand. This is also the site of our post-event celebrations!
  • Or get your gear ahead of time: Bags, gloves and a safety briefing will be available to collect beforehand from the Hirepool branch on Smart Street, Waiwhakaiho — so you can head straight to a spot that means something to you.
  • More gear pick-up points for the Western and Southern parts of the region are still being finalised — stay tuned for details.
  • Dropping off what you collect: We’ll have collection points set up near SH35 for the wider region, or we encourage you to bring what you’ve gathered along to the celebration afterwards.
  • Celebrate with us: From 2pm–5.30pm (till the sun goes down) at East End Surf Lifesaving Club — food, drinks, beach games, educational displays and music.

Register below and we’ll be in touch with location details and logistics as the day gets closer and more support is confirmed.

Group clean-ups: Monday 14 – Saturday 19 September 2026

In the week before the big day, we’re inviting schools, marae/hapū, businesses and community groups to express interest in a clean-up we’ll organise with you, wherever suits your group. We have Friday, 18 September set aside for schools, but if this doesn’t work for your school, just let us know! Let’s spread our efforts far and wide across the mighty Taranaki Peninsula, covering as much ground as we can.

Get in touch using the form below, or email sam@sustainablecoastlines.org, and let us know if you’d like something arranged during the week for your group. We can offer:

  • Educational presentations
  • Corporate team-building sessions
  • The chance to learn about Litter Intelligence — where we collect data to build insights and inform action on reducing waste and litter

Spots are first-come, first-served, so get in early. Once you’ve registered, we’ll be in touch directly by phone or email to sort dates, timing, location and logistics.
